Canada’s Steel Industry Reacts to New Tariff Measures: Praise and Expectations

Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done

The head of Canada’s steel industry association has responded positively to new measures brought forward by Prime Minister Mark Carney. These steps are aimed at bolstering the domestic market against U.S tariffs.

Carney announced strategies to aid steel and lumber producers. This encompasses tighter quotas on foreign steel entering Canada and plans to reduce freight rates for trans-provincial material transportation.

Catherine Cobden, CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association, has expressed her views on these measures. While not seeing them as a full offset for the loss of the U.S. market, she acknowledges them as a positive development.

Cobden expressed concerns about the second extension of Canada’s remission program for certain steel importers. This, she views as a dilution of Ottawa’s retaliatory measures against U.S. steel.

She intends to keep the federal government committed to its promises on terminating the remission program.
