Canada’s Steel Industry Responds to New Tariff Measures by PM Mark Carney
Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done
The head of the Canadian Steel Industry Association has shown approval of the new measures presented by Prime Minister Mark Carney. However, a note of discontent was registered pertaining to an aspect of the plan.
The specific measures taken into action by Carney include the imposition of stricter quotas on foreign steel entering Canada and a pledge to decrease the rail freight rates for materials that cross provincial boundaries.
Catherine Cobden, CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association:
She voices that these measures, albeit beneficial, will fail to make up for the loss incurred due to the U.S. market and expresses disappointment about the continuation of Canada’s remission program.
It is unveiled that Cobden plans to push the government to adhere to its vow of terminating the remission program by the end of January. External video links regarding Canada found at the end can be omitted when considering the primary information of the post.
