Canada’s Steel Sector Reacts to New Tariff Measures by Prime Minister Mark Carney

Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done

Canada’s steel industry welcomes new tariff measures with praise, yet highlights the necessity for further action.

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s measures

Prime Minister Mark Carney has unveiled strategies to bolster the domestic steel market. These measures encompass tightening of quotas on foreign steel within Canada and cutting down the freight charges for materials transported domestically.

Views from the Canadian Steel Producers Association

Catherine Cobden, CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association, voices apprehension that the new measures, although a step in the right direction, might not sufficiently offset the loss witnessed in accessing the U.S. market. Her remarks convey the industry’s disappointment following Ottawa’s decision to extend Canada’s remission program for certain steel importers, consequently reducing the effect of Ottawa’s retaliatory tariffs on U.S. steel.

Extension of remission program

Cobden further calls out the federal government for delaying the finalization of the remission program beyond its promised deadline of end-January, which is over three months past the original deadline.
