Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done

The recent tariff measures have been welcomed by Canada’s steel industry. However, there are concerns and demands for additional actions. Mark Carney, the Prime Minister, has been a part of these recent developments, along with those pertaining to U.S. tariffs.

Key Measures: Prime Minister Carney revealed new measures to support steel and lumber producers. These include stricter quotas on foreign steel entering Canada, and reduced freight rates for materials crossing provincial borders.

Catherine Cobden, the CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association, argues that these measures are a positive move, yet they may not fully compensate for the loss of access to the U.S. market.

Call for Accountability: Cobden voiced her discontent with Ottawa’s decision to prolong the remission program. She reaffirmed her resolve to hold the federal government accountable for its promise to cease the program by the end of January.
