Canada’s Steel Sector Reacts to New Tariff Measures: Says More Needs to Be Done

Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done

The head of Canada’s steel industry association expressed views on Prime Minister Mark Carney’s strategies addressing U.S. tariff concerns.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced new initiatives to back steel and lumber manufacturers in Canada.

These measures include enforcing quotas on foreign steel in Canada and enhancing freight prices for materials crossing provincial boundaries.

Catherine Cobden, CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association, shared her insights on the new initiatives and their effect on the industry’s reach to the U.S. market.

The industry displayed their disappointment towards Ottawa’s second extension to Canada’s remission scheme for some steel importers. Details of Ottawa’s reciprocal levies on U.S. steel were also covered.

Expectations from the federal government suggest the termination of the remission program by end of January as assured by Prime Minister Carney.
