Canadian Steel Industry reacts to new tariff measures

# Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done

The head of Canada’s steel industry association expresses partial disappointment in the measures proposed by Prime Minister Mark Carney, designed to bolster the domestic market amidst U.S. tariffs.

Carney announced new measures, which include quotas on foreign steel and a cut on freight rates for materials crossing provincial borders.

Catherine Cobden, CEO of Canadian Steel Producers Association, states these measures might not adequately compensate for the loss of access to the U.S. market, but acknowledges they are a move in the right direction.

Cobden voices disappointment about Ottawa announcing an extension to Canada’s remission program for some steel importers which weakens Ottawa’s retaliatory tariffs on U.S. steel.

In conclusion, Cobden hopes to hold the federal government accountable for promises made, such as the wrap-up of the remission program by the end of January.
