Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done
The lead of the Canadian steel industry association expressed disappointment toward one aspect of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s measures to boost the Canadian market against U.S. tariffs.
Carney’s New Measures
Prime Minister Carney introduced measures including tighter quotas on foreign steel and a promise to reduce freight rates for cross-provincial transport aid steel and lumber producers.
The Industry’s Reaction
Catherine Cobden, CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association, commented that while the measures are positive, they are not likely to fully compensate for the loss of the U.S. market.
Industry Disappointment
Ottawa’s second extension on Canada’s remission program for steel importers faced criticism, highlighting the industry’s disappointment.
Federal Government Promises
Cobden emphasized the importance of the federal government’s commitment to end the remission program by the end of January.
