Canadian Steel Industry Responds to New Tariff Measures
Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done
New measures were announced this Wednesday by Carney for the benefit of steel and lumber producers. These comprise increasing quota restrictions on foreign steel and a promise to reduce freight rates for transport across provinces.
Canadian Steel Producers Association CEO Catherine Cobden’s response
Catherine Cobden, CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association, stated that although the measures would not completely make up for the loss of access to the U.S. market, they are a step towards relief for the struggling sector.
Extension to Canada’s remission program for some steel importers
Cobden expressed dissatisfaction at Ottawa’s decision to continue the national remission program for certain steel importers in crucial sectors. This action waters down the countervailing tariffs on U.S. steel. Further to this, Cobden intends to hold the government accountable for their promise to end the remission program by the end of January.
