Canadian Steel Industry Responds to New Tariff Measures: A Mixed Reaction
Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done
The reaction of Canada’s steel industry: The leader of the sector expressed a mixed sentiment towards Prime Minister Mark Carney‘s new initiatives to elevate the domestic market amidst U.S. tariffs, hinting at the need for additional measures.
On Wednesday, Carney unveiled a package of actions intended to aid steel and lumber manufacturers find domestic markets for their goods.
Highlighted measures included tightening restrictions on international steel coming into Canada and a commitment to decrease the cost of freight for materials transported between provinces by rail.
Despite these efforts, Catherine Cobden, the CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association, voiced some disappointment regarding the absence of government action on Canada’s remission programme.
In the light of these new tariff measures, Cobden expressed an anticipation for the federal government’s assurance concerning the termination of the remission programme.
