Canadian Steel Industry Responds to PM Mark Carney’s New Tariff Measures
Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done
Prime Minister Mark Carney’s new measures to support Canada’s steel industry have received mixed reactions. While the industry’s head expressed satisfaction with most parts of the package, it was highlighted that further steps are required in the face of U.S. tariffs.
On Wednesday, Carney announced actions aimed at assisting steel and lumber producers in reaching new Canadian markets. Though the measures are expected to boost industries affected by U.S tariffs, concerns remain about lost access to the U.S market.
Catherine Cobden, CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association, articulated reservations about the newly announced measures. While she appreciates them as a positive step, she stressed the fact that they won’t fully compensate for the loss of the U.S market.
Cobden further vowed to keep the federal government accountable. Following Carney’s promise that a remission program would conclude by the end of January, she has expressed intentions to ensure that this commitment is fulfilled, a whopping three months after the original deadline.
