Canadian Steel Sector on New Tariff Measures: Praise & Critique
Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done
The head of Canada’s steel industry association expressed disappointment about Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recently introduced package of measures.
The new measures: PM Carney introduced new strategies to help steel and lumber producers find fresh markets for their goods within Canada.
Canadian Steel Producers Association’s CEO, Catherine Cobden, shared insights stating that the new measures won’t fully compensate for the loss of access to the U.S. market.
Further, Cobden voiced concerns over the extension of the remission program for some steel importers and how it dilutes Ottawa’s retaliatory tariffs on U.S. steel.
Following Carney’s promise regarding the remission program, Cobden expects more action from the federal government to bolster the domestic steel industry.
