Canadian Steel Sector Reacts to Government Tariff Measures

Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done.

The head of the Canadian steel industry association expressed satisfaction with the tariff measures introduced by Prime Minister Mark Carney to boost the domestic steel market amidst U.S. Tariffs. An area of disappointment was also touched upon, although it’s not specified here.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced measures to boost local steel and lumber producers. Though a brief explanation of the measures was given, the details remained light.

Catherine Cobden, the CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association, opines that these measures won’t significantly replace the loss from the blocked U.S. market. However, she agrees they are a step in the right direction. The second extension to Canada’s remission program was mentioned as a source of disappointment.
