Canadian Steel Sector Responds to PM Carney’s New Tariff Measures
Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done
The head of Canada’s steel industry lauds Prime Minister Mark Carney’s package of measures but expresses disappointment on a critical issue.
Carney’s new measures aim to bolster the domestic market against U.S. tariffs. However, the lack of definitive timeline could pose uncertainties.
Catherine Cobden sees potential problems with the measures being insufficient to offset loss from the US market, but communicates that they represent progress nonetheless.
Notwithstanding the advancements, Cobden disapproves of Ottawa’s move to extend the remission program for steel importers twice, arguing it might undermine local industry.
However, Cobden vows to hold the government accountable following Carney’s remission program pledges expected by the end of January.
