Canadian Steel Sector’s Mixed Reaction to New Tariffs: Opportunities & Challenges

Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done

Prime Minister Mark Carney is receiving mixed reviews for his package of measures aimed to boost Canada’s steel market amid U.S. tariffs. The head of Canada’s steel industry association expresses some disappointment at the measures.

New measures announced by Carney aim to help Canadian steel and lumber producers find alternative markets for their products domestically.

The proposed changes include stricter quotas on foreign steel imports and a promise to cut rail freight rates for materials transported across provinces.

Catherine Cobden, CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association, acknowledges that while these measures won’t fully offset the loss of access to the U.S. market, they represent a beginning towards offering some relief to the beleaguered industry.
