Canadian Steel Sector’s Reaction to New Tariff Measures
Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done
Introduction: The Head of Canada’s Steel Industry Association has given a bittersweet reception to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s fresh measures designed to bolster the domestic market against U.S. tariffs.
Tariff Measures: The new measures, as unveiled by the Prime Minister, consist of tight quotas and diminished freight rates for materials traversing the provincial borders.
Industry Reaction: Catherine Cobden, CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA), expresses partial approval of the measures, but is pessimistic about them fully offsetting the loss of the U.S. market. She further expresses dissatisfaction with the government’s second extension to Canada’s remission program.
Remarks on Ottawa’s Retaliatory Tariffs: Cobden is doubtful about Ottawa’s choice to extend the remission program, and is adamant she’ll hold the government to its commitment to terminate the program by the end of January.
