Industry Reaction to New Tariff Measures on Steel in Canada

Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done

The head of Canada’s steel industry association says: Catherine Cobden, the CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association, spoke on the reaction to recent measures taken by Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Carney announced new measures Wednesday: These measures include additional support for Canadian steel and lumber producers along with new quotas on foreign steel.

Canadian Steel Producers Association CEO Catherine Cobden says: While praising the measures, Cobden voiced concerns that they will not fully compensate for the loss of access to the U.S. market.

She says the industry was disappointed… The disappointment stems from Ottawa’s second extension to Canada’s remission program for some steel imports and proposed retaliatory tariffs on U.S. steel.

Cobden says she’ll be holding the federal government… accountable after the prime minister’s announcement, due to the promise to end the remission program in January and the extension beyond the original deadline.
