Reaction to New Support Measures for Canadian Steel Industry | Canadian Tariffs Updates
Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done
The Canadian Steel Industry reacts to support measures announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney to aid the domestic industry amidst US tariffs. The response? Approval with a hint of dissatisfaction due to unresolved issues.
New Measures Announced
In an effort to support Canadian steel and lumber producers, Carney has announced stricter quotas on foreign steel entering Canada and reduced freight rates for materials crossing provincial borders.
Reflection of the industry
The Canadian Steel Producers Association thought of these measures through their CEO, Catherine Cobden. She appreciates the support, but also suggests incomplete compensation due to the loss of the U.S. market.
Industry’s Disappointment about extension
The industry expressed disappointment over Ottawa’s decision to extend the remission program for some steel importers, a point commented on by Cobden. Carney has, however, committed to ending the program by January.
