Steel Industry Comments on New Tariff Measures by Mark Carney

Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done

The head of Canada’s steel industry association has voiced a sole disappointment, amidst other benefits, in the package of measures presented by Prime Minister Mark Carney. These measures are aimed at supporting the national steel and lumber industry.

Carney had made a Wednesday announcement introducing new measures. These included tighter quotas on foreign steel entering Canada and a pledge to lower freight rates for materials shipped across provincial borders by rail.

Catherine Cobden, the CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association, states that although beneficial, these measures might not fully compensate for the loss of U.S market access.

In response, Cobden holds the federal government responsible for keeping its promise after Carney pledged that the remission program would conclude by the end of January.
