Canada’s Steel Industry Reacts to New Tariff Measures by PM Mark Carney

Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done

Canada’s steel industry offers a mixed response to the new protective measures by Prime Minister Mark Carney aimed at bolstering the domestic market in the light of U.S. tariffs.

These new measures involve tighter restrictions on foreign steel entering Canada and a reduction in freight rates for materials moving across provincial borders by rail.

Catherine Cobden, CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association, spoke outabout the potential shortcomings of the measures. While she praised them as a step towards the right direction, she expressed disappointment at the continuation of Canada’s remission program for certain steel importers.

In conclusion, Cobden insists on holding the federal government accountable for their promise to terminate the remission program by the end of January, well beyond its original deadline.
