Canadian Steel Sector Reacts to New Tariff Measures by PM Mark Carney
Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done
Introduction: Despite feeling challenge by some of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s measures, the Canadian steel industry acknowledges the helpful effort to stimulate the domestic steel market amid the U.S tariffs.
New Measures by Carney: The latest relief measures announced by Carney for steel and lumber producers involve tighter quotas on foreign steel and lower freight rates for materials crossing territorial borders, in an effort to stimulate new markets within Canada.
Statement from Industry Leader: In a response to the new measures, Catherine Cobden, the CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association, expressed that while the initiatives won’t entirely bridge the gap caused by reduced access to the U.S market, they are still a step forward.
