Canadian Steel Sector Reacts to New Tariff Measures by PM Carney
Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done
The head of Canada’s steel industry: Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney revamps domestic steel market amidst U.S. tariffs. The measures are meant to stimulate the domestic market.
Carney announced new measures Wednesday: The focus of these measures is to support steel and lumber producers in finding new markets within Canada.
Canadian Steel Producers Association CEO Catherine Cobden says: While appreciating the new measures, it is recognized that they will not fully offset the U.S. market losses faced by Canadian steel producers.
She says the industry was disappointed: Discontentment brews in the industry over Canada’s second extension to the steel remission program, which weakens Ottawa’s retaliatory tariffs on U.S. steel.
Cobden says she’ll be holding the federal government: Cobden pledges to hold the federal government accountable for ending the controversial remission program, which has stirred disappointment in the industry.
