Canada’s Steel Sector Responds to New Tariff Measures
Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done
The head of the Canadian steel industry has responded to new measures introduced by Prime Minister Carney. Despite some disappointment, the industry recognizes the overall usefulness of the tariff package.
Carney announced new measures Wednesday aimed at boosting local steel and lumber producers.
Canadian Steel Producers Association CEO Catherine Cobden says the moves are positive but stresses the consequential effects of losing access to the U.S. market.
She expresses industry’s disappointment with the extension of the remission program and its implications on retaliatory tariffs.
Cobden says she’ll be holding the federal government accountable for the timely completion of the remission program, which is already delayed by more than three months past its original deadline.
