Canada’s Steel Sector Responds to New Tariff Measures: More Action Needed
Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done
In an effort to boost the domestic market, Prime Minister Mark Carney has introduced certain rules amid U.S. tariffs.
His measures for steel and lumber producers consist of tighter foreign steel quotas and reduced freight rates for material transport within provinces.
Catherine Cobden, CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association, says while these policies provide some respite, they do not fully offset the U.S. market loss.
Cobden is concerned that Ottawa’s extension of the remission program for some steel importers weakens the impact of Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on U.S steel.
She plans to ensure the federal government sticks to its promise of ending the remission program by January’s end. For reference, embedded below are related video clips.
