Canadian Steel Industry’s response to new Tariff Measures: Approval and Appeal

Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done

The head of Canada’s steel industry association has responded to new measures from Prime Minister Mark Carney intended to boost the domestic market, amidst existing U.S. tariffs.

New Measures Introduced: The Prime Minister announced initiatives to aid steel and lumber producers find domestic markets. These include stricter quotas on foreign steel and a reduction in freight rates.

Catherine Cobden, from the Canadian Steel Producers Association, voiced her opinion on the impact of these measures and stressed the need for further industry relief.

The extension of the country’s remission program for steel importers has created dismay. This program dilutes the retaliatory tariffs imposed on U.S. steel.

Cobden pledges to hold Canada’s federal government accountable for the swift conclusion of the remission program, expected at the end of January.
