Reaction to New Tariff Measures: Steel Industry’s Perspective

Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done

Canada’s steel industry chief, critiquing the recent measure package by Prime Minister Mark Carney, intended to bolster the local market amidst U.S. tariffs, raised concerns.

Carney’s new measures, announced to assist steel and lumber producers to find markets in Canada, includes tighter foreign steel quotas and lower freight rates.

Catherine Cobden, CEO of Canadian Steel Producers Association, voiced out that the measures might not wholly offset the U.S. market loss, however, acknowledged their use.

Expressing disappointment over Ottawa’s move to prolong remissions for some steel importers, Cobden claimed that it undermines the retaliatory tariffs on U.S steel.

Following Carney’s assurance, Cobden holds the federal government accountable to end the remission program by January close.
