Canadian Steel Sector Reacts to New Tariff Measures by PM Mark Carney
Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done.
Concerns from the steel industry: Despite the Prime Minister’s package introducing measures to boost the domestic industry amidst U.S tariffs, the steel sector believes more needs to be done.
PM Carney introduced aid for steel and lumber producers, including tighter quotas on foreign steel entering Canada and a reduction in freight rates for materials crossing provinces. However, the industry still seeks improvements.
Catherine Cobden’s perspective: Despite regarding the implemented measures as a positive step, the Canadian Steel Producers Association CEO, Catherine Cobden, suggests that these might not suffice to offset the loss of U.S. market access.
Cobden criticizes the extension of the remission program for steel importers, a move that lowers Ottawa’s retaliatory tariffs on U.S. steel. She is firmly committed to holding the government responsible for its promise to terminate the program by the end of January.
