Canadian Steel Sector Reacts to New Tariff Measures – The Impact and Expectations

Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done

The head of Canada’s steel industry association representative, Catherine Cobden, has made an initial statement on the newly implemented tariff measures, signaling some dissatisfaction.

Specific measures, announced by PM Mark Carney, to assist Canadian steel and lumber producers include tighter quotas on foreign steel entering Canada and reduction of freight rates.

Catherine Cobden views these measures as a good start, but insists they are far from a complete solution. Additionally, she highlights the industry’s need for relief.

There has been criticism from Cobden on Canada’s remission program for steel importers in critical industries, extended from the current policy.

After Carney’s promises, Cobden expects a follow through from the federal government as the end date of the current remission program approaches in late January.
