Canada’s Steel Sector reacts to New Tariff Measures | Industry Perspective
# Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done
Canada’s steel industry leader expresses disappointment in some aspects of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s package: These measures aimed at boosting domestic market post U.S. tariffs are being met with mixed reactions.
Recent announcements include Carney’s endeavors to assist steel and lumber producers in finding fresh markets within Canada. These measures feature stricter quotas on foreign steel and a promise to reduce freight rates for materials traversing provincial borders.
Catherine Cobden, CEO of Canadian Steel Producers Association, underlines: While these measures are a step in the right direction, they might not completely compensate the steel industry’s loss of access to the U.S. market.
Cobden also showed disappointment when Ottawa announced an extension for the remission program. She believes this move weakens Ottawa’s retaliatory tariffs on U.S. steel.
Promise to hold accountable: Cobden expressed intent to hold the federal government responsible following Carney’s reassurance that the remission program would conclude by the end of January.
