Canada’s Steel Industry Reacts to new Tariff Measures: A Step Forward but Room for Improvement

Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done

Canada’s steel industry has reacted to new tariff measures aimed at boosting the domestic market, tightening quotas on foreign steel entering Canada, and a commitment to reduce freight rates for materials transported across provincial borders by rail.

Catherine Cobden, CEO of Canadian Steel Producers Association, has voiced her thoughts on the newly introduced measures. Her major contention lies with the U.S. tariffs, which she believes the new measures won’t fully compensate for the loss of access to the U.S. market. However, she views these measures as a step in the right direction.

The Canadian Steel industry is also looking forward to the Promise made by Mark Carney to complete the remission program by the end of January.
