Canadian Steel Sector Responds to New Tariff Measures – Market Boost and Industry Expectations

Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done

Canada’s steel industry association highlights Prime Minister Mark Carney’s measures to invigorate the domestic steel market amidst U.S. tariffs, showing an optimistic sight yet demanding further action.

Discussing the new measures, Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced transformations that would help steel and lumber producers explore fresh markets. They encompass alterations in foreign steel quotas and adjustments in freight rates.

Catherine Cobden, the CEO of Canadian Steel Producers Association, voiced her opinion on these measures, considering their impact on the industry.

The steel industry expressed its dissatisfaction concerning the extension to Canada’s remission program for some steel importers, marked as Ottawa’s second extension.

Cobden, looking forward, put forth her expectations from the government and shared her views on the remission program, indicating a need for further improvements by the end of January.
