Canadian Steel Industry Reacts to New Tariff Measures – Calls for More Support

Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done.

The Canadian steel industry association has expressed mixed feelings regarding Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent measures aimed to shield the domestic market from U.S tariffs. Despite alluding slight disappointment, the organization believes there’s room for improvements.Note: This report includes two external links and an image.

In a bid to protect the domestic market, Carney has imposed tighter controls on foreign steel entering Canada, along with reduced freight rates for materials crossing provincial borders. A link to further information on these measures can be found in this section.

Catherine Cobden, CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association, provides her insights on these measures, pointing out to the desperately needed relief for the industry amidst these trying times.

However, the industry has not taken kindly to Ottawa extending remission programs for some steel importers, which has ostensibly weakened Ottawa’s retaliatory tariffs against U.S. steel.

Cobden expects the federal government to uphold the commitments made regarding the remission program, citing January as a deadline for compliance. She hopes more extensive efforts will be made in the future to support the Canadian steel industry.
