Canadian Steel Sector Responds favourably to New Tariffs, Craves for More

Steel sector praises new tariff measures, but says more needs to be done.

Introduction: Catherine Cobden, CEO of Canadian Steel Producers Association, brings to light the apprehension and enthusiasm the steel industry harbours towards the newly announced measures by Prime Minister Mark Carney.

New Measures Announcement: PM Carney announced plans aimed at strengthening the local market. This includes implementing stricter quotas on foreign steel and decreasing freight tariffs.

CEO’s Feedback: While acknowledging that these measures are steps in the right direction, Cobden commented that they fall short of entirely resolving the current problems. A sense of letdown was expressed over the second extension of the remission program.

Future Expectations: The industry is hopeful and looks forward to the government’s assurances, stressing the need for the remission program to wrap up by the end of January.
